Greenfriar Has Arrived!

Just what is a “greenfriar,” anyway? It’s Friar Tuck laughing in the woods between raids on the king’s men, St. Francis wandering the countryside talking to birds, Katniss Everdeen living lightly off the land, monks brewing beer in an alpine village, and Johnny Appleseed building community gardens for America’s rough new settlements. And now it’s Greenfriar.com, a place for those of us who give a hoot.  (more…)

Robin and the Seven Hoods.

If you would like to share a link, please send it to editor@greenfriar.com with a short description.

To share a previously posted photograph you took, or text that you wrote, please send a short note to editor@greenfriar.com along with a link to the material. Same goes for press releases and action alerts—we are especially interested in hearing about the victories of your local or bioregional nature group.

Greenfriar is a new publication with a very small editorial budget, and we publish only a handful of freelance features each month. We will contact you if your submission is right for Greenfriar. The rate is currently $50 for anything we accept, payable on the 15th of the month after publication. We like personal stories, humorous essays about your attempts to live sustainably or build your dream cabin out of twigs, accounts of great and not-so-great adventures, that sort of thing. Make us laugh, make us cry, make us want to save the world by your side, etc. We do not regularly publish blog-style items, rants, or lists by freelancers, nor do we publish much in the way of “breaking news.”

One day, we will launch our companion site, Greenfriar.org, which will help you find a community of like-minded people in your town or village or general proximity. We’re happy to hear good ideas and crazy schemes.
